From yellowpages at hillcrestpta.org Wed Oct 4 20:29:57 2006 From: yellowpages at hillcrestpta.org (yellowpages at hillcrestpta.org) Date: Wed, 04 Oct 2006 20:29:57 -0400 Subject: [YP] Hillcrest Yellow Pages 10.3.2006 Message-ID: <20061004202957.s9kzdhjm8sskg8g0@webmail.hillcrestpta.org> Hillcrest Yellow Pages Vol X, No. 6 Oct. 3, 2006 A Note from the Principal On September 7th, I presented data celebrating our progress on the California Standards Test over the past year. There was one slide that needed further clarification?the slide on disaggregated data. I apologize for any misunderstanding caused by not providing a more complete discussion. We are required by No Child Left Behind and by our district to look at data disaggregated by ethnic groups, by male compared with female, by English language learners or by students with learning disabilities. The intent is good. If a cluster of students appear to be struggling, the staff can brainstorm ways to teach differently so that all can be successful. To quote Marie Clay, "If children are apparently unable to learn, we should assume that we have not as yet found the right way to teach them." Our small clusters are so tiny that statisticians consider the numbers to be statistically insignificant. We would need each of our small groups to be a minimum of 100 students. Yet, as a staff, we still want to look just to be sure we haven't inadvertently ignored a population of students, no matter how small. In our case, ALL of our small clusters of students are doing extremely well. And while raw percentages might point to a gap in achievement, in reality, there is no gap. For example, a difference of 10 percent could seem large. But, ten percent of 26 are just 2.6 students. On any testing day, we have at least a dozen students suffering from colds, allergies, or just having a bad day. In fact, one cluster, our African American students, are doing so well that a majority are identified Gifted and Talented. So by going deeper to understand our data, we can enthusiastically say that ALL of our students are learning and thriving. PTA President's Message Our hearts go out to Beverly whose father passed away this past Friday. Many of you have asked about a collective memorial response, I will be working with the PTA Board to determine the appropriate response and will communicate that to all of you either through an all school email or in the next edition of the Yellow Pages. Until then, please join me in offering my profound condolences to Beverly and her entire family. As you know this is an election year and while the California State PTA does not endorse candidates for public office, they do take positions on issues that affect children and youth. For the November 7, 2006 General Election, the California State PTA has taken positions on three of the thirteen ballot measures. These are Proposition 1D, Proposition 86, and Proposition 88. Vote YES on Proposition 1D: This is a legislative bond act to raise $10.4 Billion of general obligation bonds for K-12 school facilities ($7.3 Billion) and higher education facilities ($3.1 Billion). These funds will be used to make California schools earthquake safe, reduce overcrowding, update schools with the latest technology, build new facilities for career technical education, and build college labs. Vote YES on Proposition 86: This is an initiative measure that would amend the state constitution, imposing an additional 13 cent tax on each cigarette distributed ($2.60 per pack) to provide funding for hospitals for emergency services as well as programs to increase access to health insurance for children, expand nursing education, support various new and existing health and educational activities, curb tobacco use and regulate tobacco sales. Opponents are concerned that the additional tax would cause a decline in cigarette consumption which would then reduce tax receipts from tobacco products overall. Vote NO on Proposition 88: This measure is a constitutional amendment that would create an annual statewide tax of $50 on each property parcel starting July 2, 2007. The funds would be used for class size reduction, textbooks, school safety, academic success facility related grants, and an investment in an integrated longitudinal data system. The PTA opposes this measure because it believes it is poorly drafted and could end up costing many schools more than it would provide. I believe that each of you should research these important measures and make your own decision on how to vote. However, I thought it was important to share the State PTA's official stand. For additional details, please visit the State PTA website at http://www.capta.org/sections/advocacy/nov2006.cfm. I do not anticipate the Hillcrest School PTA taking an official stand on these measures. Becky Johnson PTA President Events / Programs Benefit for Hillcrest 2006 I WANT MY HTV?MUSIC OF THE 1980'S! Halloween Costumes October 31 is fast approaching and the stores are filled with costumes to tempt our children. Please remember that a costume for school can be different than the costume worn Trick or Treating. Our younger students have difficulty differentiating between reality and a costume ? so severed limbs and scary faces can be very frightening. Costume weapons such as swords, lasers, daggers, scythe, etc. are not allowed at school. Rule of thumb: If you have a question about appropriateness, it probably is not. As always, use your best judgment in making or purchasing costumes that are safe, visible and fire-retardant. Fire Alarm Update Many who live near Hillcrest have noticed a number of very dramatic fire alarms after hours - often in the wee hours. OUSD Bldgs and Grounds Mgmt believes that these false alarms are due to a tiny insect (or colony) that have made their home in a smoke detector. Their after-dark flights inside the detector look a lot like smoke particles! After several attempts to clean the detector, and 2 alarms on Wed 9/27, it was replaced on 9/29. OUSD assures us they will monitor it closely. REMINDERS Paper Scrip Sales Wednesdays From 8:20 to 8:45, Village Market and Berkeley Bowl scrip are available in $20 increments. We will be meeting in the Multipurpose Room. See you there. Beware of Driveways: Please help us teach our children to treat driveways like crosswalks ? stop and look both ways before crossing. Several near-misses were reported recently. Children running or riding ahead of their parents are often too tiny to be seen by a car backing out of a driveway. Children rushing to school and adults rushing to work can result in a tragic accident. So, STOP and look both ways before crossing a driveway. One other safety concern: OUSD policy requires all visitors, including parents, sign in at the office and wear a guest tag. While it will take a couple of extra minutes, it is a part of our safety policy. Halloween Parade: Please join us along the parade route beginning at 2 pm. After returning to school we will take one loop around our yard and return to class. Ater-school Class Schedule Changed This Week Please remember that most after-school classes are canceled this week to facilitate parent-teacher conferences. Art class with Gitty Duncan will take place this week, though, as a make-up for last week's cancellation. Lost and Found: The two clothes racks outside the Boy's Bathroom are our lost and found. Please check the lost and found often. We will be donating clothes at the end of the month. PTA President's Message Mark your calendars: The PTA is sponsoring two upcoming events you'll want to be sure are on your family calendar. First, this Thursday, October 26 we will join the Aurora School to hear registered dietician, Jane Fowler, discuss "How to Raise a Healthy Eater." This event will be on the Aurora School campus from 7 pm to 8:30 pm. Childcare will be available for elementary school aged kids at Aurora. Second, the San Francisco Shakespeare Festival's Shakespeare on Tour will present The Comedy of Errors at Hillcrest on Thursday, November 2, at 7 pm. This is one of Shakespeare's most humorous plays with a hefty dose of slapstick and, of course, some mistaken identity. The performance is scheduled to run 55 minutes and will be in the Hillcrest Multi-purpose room. Please join us for this family event; adults and kids of all ages are welcome. Thanks for the costume exchange: A heartfelt thanks to Donna Abare and Gordon Fleig for organizing the annual costume exchange this past Saturday. I know it's a ton of work to collect the costumes, transport them to school, display them and then supervise the middle-schoolers to make sure they're on track, but it really is a wonderful event. Our four year old is quite smitten by his fireman/fire truck ensemble that we picked up on Saturday in exchange for an old Dorothy costume and a Care Bear outfit. I feel so environmentally with it to have participated in this delightful Hillcrest tradition. Becky Johnson PTA President Events / Programs Parent Education Night Are mealtimes a battleground in your house? Dr. Jane Fowler, PhD. And Registered Dietician, will share insights and tips on how to raise healthy eaters! We ask every Hillcrest family use the form on the back of this sheet to donate at least one bottle of wine. From exquisite French Champagne to local favorite Napa Valley Cabernet, to up-and-coming Australian Shiraz ? pick your favorite vintner, a vintage year with special meaning to you/your family, or one special bottle that perhaps has a fun and crazy story! Any and all wines welcome! Please attach this form to the bottle(s) so we can feature a few of the wines in the catalog: ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- HILLCREST INSTANT WINE CELLAR DONATION Winery: Year: Type: Region: Donated by: Email Address: Estimated value: What makes it special (describe it or tell a story!): ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- We'll have "Wine Drop" boxes at the gates during drop off/pick up on designated dates, or you can deliver to the Costarella?s at 180 Beechwood Drive (or email Sumi slshohara at yahoo.com, Jennifer chapman at wildplanet.com, or Jan Leuin asymetry at flash.net) and we'll swing by your home and pick it up.
