We were recognized for "improving academic achievement for all students." Several Oakland schools were also honored: Joaquin Miller, Montclair, Redwood Heights, Sequoia, Think College Now, Monarch Academy. The 29th Annual Martin Luther King Jr. Oratorical Fest is coming!!! Now is the time to find or write a poem, speech or prose to memorize and practice. Students will be performing at Hillcrest on Wednesday, January 16th at 11:00. From this group we will select students to go on to the final competition, March 7. The theme is "Raising the Expectation." I hope to see many students and classes participating! My new favorite website: http://www.FreeRice.com FreeRice is a vocabulary building game for students and adults. By playing the game, FreeRice and its donors contribute 20 grains of rice for each correct answer. The rice is donated to the United Nations World Food Program. Check out the website (http://www.freerice.com), it's a very creative way to help hungry people. PTA PRESIDENT'S MESSAGE Family Fun Night December 14th: We're showing Ratatouille at our first family movie night! It starts at 7 p.m., and refreshments will be provided. Please plan to supervise your children during this event so that everyone in attendance can enjoy the show! Thank you 4th Grade ? for uploading photos of your recent field trip to the PTA account at Kodak Gallery. We want all the kids to be in the digital yearbook at the end of the year. To do that, we need parents who have taken pictures in the classroom or on field trips to upload the photos to the site. www.kodakgallery.com username: president at hillcrestpta.org; password: hillcrest. Our wonderful co-historians (Suzie Inadomi and Wendy Wheeler) cannot be everywhere, so we hope that all digital shutterbugs will help us out! Thanks! December 6th Meeting: OUSD is planning to visit us on Thursday at 7 p.m. to provide their response to the Long Range Planning Committee Report. Directory: To clarify my prior Yellow Pages announcement regarding the directory, the Hillcrest directory is the same as it always has been and is available in printable pdf format with the email addresses and everything you have always had. Instructions for accessing and printing the Hillcrest Directory: 1. Go to http://www.hillcrestpta.org/dir/directory.php?classroom=ALL&grade=9 and select "School Directory (pdf file)" on the left hand tool bar. If you need the login info, email website at hillcrestpta.org. 2. When file opens, print the entire document or whichever pages you need. For your information, if you would like to help reduce our environmental footprint, you can choose to print just the pages you need routinely (like your child's class list) or even better, to go completely paperless if you typically have access to the computer. Please note that there is no budget category for printing the directory ? and it would cost $2,000 to print and bind if we contract it out. EVENTS/PROGRAMS Grab Your Calendar...
