Thursday, October 4th at 7pm for Grades 4-8 Piedmont Schools has offered Destination ImagiNation as a component of their Gifted and Talented program for years. Interestingly, when they opened it to ALL students, they ended up having teams that participated in national and international competitions. Destination ImaginNation is a program that fosters creativity, teamwork and problem solving. Students work together over a few months to come up with solutions to challenges laid out in the program. Each team presents their solution in a regional tournament in March. If a team advances, it is invited to participate in the state tournament in April, and possibly the global tournament in May. Thanks to Gloria Flores and Kathy Bracco, this excellent program is coming to Hillcrest! The number of Hillcrest teams able to participate depends solely on how many students and parents sign up. Please come this Thursday with your 4th through 8th grade children to learn more about this program and decide whether this is something that you would like to do. You can also heck it out at www.idodi.org. A Conversation with the Principal: First Grader: Mrs. Rothenberg, I lost a tooth! Mrs. R: Wow, so what happened? First Grader: I got five dollars!!! Mrs. R: Hummm, that's a lot of money! What are you going to do with it? First Grader: Stocks. I'm buying stocks. Later that day ? Same First Grader: Mr. Shogren, how many teeth do people have? Mr. S: Well, most have 30 but later on some of us get wisdom teeth. First Grader: I'll go with 30. Mr. S observes our first grader adding 5 dollars thirty times, trying to develop his portfolio. EVENTS/PROGRAMS Hillcrest Helps Out! It's not only the Hillcrest kids who can step up and make a difference in our community this year ? there will be opportunities for the whole family! This year's first opportunity will be on Saturday, October 13. Hillcrest is partnering with Rebuilding Together Oakland (www.rebuildingtogether.org) to help rehabilitate a very needy school in Oakland. Rebuilding Together is the nation's leading organization bringing volunteers and communities together to improve the homes, communities and lives of low-income individuals by providing free repair services for those with the greatest need. The school we will be helping is Madison Middle School. It is located in East Oakland, it is an at-risk school. The projects that need to be done are painting the teacher's lounge a soothing color and making benches for common areas that are now just open concrete. We are hoping to mobilize a group of Hillcrest parents who will donate their time to work a four hour shift (or whatever you can spare) and make these improvements for our neighbors who would otherwise never be able to get it done. The only requirement is that you are WILLING. Completely unskilled workers are welcome. However, if you DO have a skill that would be helpful, please let us know! This is a great opportunity to contribute to those in our community who have less resources than we do, a great opportunity to model community involvement to our kids and a chance to connect with each other in a new and deeper way. Please contact Donna Somerville if you'd like to join us! We really need all possible volunteers. Shift times are 9-1 and 1-5. Let us know what shift would work best for you. **note: this project is for anyone over age 14 When: Oct. 13 9-1 and 1-5 Where: Madison Middle School Contact: Donna Wright Somerville Phone: 510-594-0338 Email: dwrightsomerville at yahoo.com NEWS/ANNOUNCEMENTS MS El Capitan Field Trip ? To download and print the pdf file goto http://www.hillcrestpta.org/funds/auction2007/piratequiz2.pdf. Join the fun, test your pirate knowledge and your class may win some booty! We think that the classrooms are those of Ms. Rochester, Ms. Buswell, Ms. Lyon, and Ms. I/S. The purpose is to facilitate outdoor learning activities by providing some sun protection. Our champion for this project no longer has a child at the school and no progress was made last year. The project needs to be completed this school year, hopefully before the Spring, so that they can be useful this year. We need someone to manage this project for us (i.e., obtain the umbrellas, determine how to stabilize them, interface with the district as needed if attached to the buildings, and manage installation). The umbrellas/shade sails are relatively inexpensive (Costco online). The logistics will be the challenge. Can you take this on? When: We need a champion identified by November 15th and hopefully sooner. If no one steps forward, we will revert the funds to the general PTA fund. Where: Hopefully on the patios Skills: It's helpful if you have some engineering background but if you don't that's okay. You just need to be able to follow through and interface with the teachers, the principal and anyone at the district who needs to approve the installation. October 31 is fast approaching and the stores are filled with costumes to tempt our children. Our younger students have difficulty differentiating between reality and a costume ? so severed limbs and scary faces can be very frightening. Costume weapons such as swords, lasers, daggers, scythe, etc. are not allowed at school. A child's costume at school can be different from the one they use trick-or-treating. Rule of thumb: If you have a question about whether or not an item is permissible, it probably is not. As always, use your best judgment in making or purchasing costumes that are safe, visible and fire-retardant. Drop off in morning & pick up in afternoon ? Outfitted with my Mickey Mits and with the help of enthusiastic third graders and their parents, our drop off zone is working beautifully. So, why double park or park on our very narrow streets? If your child is a first grader or older, use the Marguerite Drive drop off and be on your way in seconds. By doing so, we can ease parking congestion around our neighborhood. Caught Being Amazing: Thank you to Kristen Kwan, Nancy Scanlon and Cara Brockbank for their hard work sprucing up our sensory garden this past Sunday. Thank you. Ms. Bahr's 5th grade class worked hard the past two weeks to plant a visual screen in front of the library, 4th and 5th grade classrooms. It was the hope of the teachers to plant a visual barrier to help shield the classrooms from the playground. The students enthusiastically shoveled out the dirt (until they hit rock),unloaded bags of soil and expertly worked together as a team to get the plants in the ground. We would like to also thank Peggy Toppin, Anna Edmonson, Rebecca Longenecker, David Ichikawa, and Gloria Flores, the fabulous parents who helped supervise the project. Andy Packer lent us his crew of workers on very short notice to help dig up the rocks and Ken Dupee spent some precious weekend time jack hammering so our lovely plants had room to grow. Thanks to all. The fruits of your labor will be appreciated in a few years when the shrubs are tall, green and screening out the playground! HELP WANTED Do You Speak Spanish? Under the guidance of LaJoyce Porter, a former Hillcrest parent, we washed down, spackled and painted the teachers lounge a cheery yellow. Some of us built and paint benches. Thanks to David Ichikawa, Donna Somerville and Rebuilding Together Oakland for organizing this terrific opportunity. Thanks to our volunteers who include: Matt Campbell, Joanne Karchmer, Margo Malone, Lavella Barney, Kevin Barney, Janice Jagelski, Karen Plessinger, Katrina Saba, Sarah Campbell, Terry Cullinane, Makenna Murray, Ernest Blackman, Bobbie Porter. You are amazing! Volunteer at Lockwood Elementary School: If you'd like an opportunity to lend a hand, we need volunteers on Saturday, November 3 (10am-noon) to help plant 600 daffodils at Lockwood. See details in this issue of Yellowpages. I've got my trowel and gloves ready to go! Our Middle School Cross Country team came in 1st out of 10 teams in their first meet as a team at Mills College on September 27th. They scored 60, to the next best team's 85 (the top 5 places for each team are added together for the team score, so the low score wins). Congratulations to Carina, Dylan, Eliza, Kylie, and Maya. Halloween costumes: October 31 is fast approaching and the stores are filled with costumes to tempt our children. Drop off in morning & pick up in afternoon: If your child is a first grader or older, use the Marguerite Drive drop off and be on your way in seconds. Avoid parking or dropping off on Mandalay, and definitely avoid parking on Wilding. By doing so, we can ease parking congestion around our neighborhood. Heads Up Middle School Parents: Report Cards are coming home this week via your child. PTA PRESIDENT'S MESSAGE Homework 101 for Parents: Please be sure to mark your calendars for our PTA programming event on October 25th! At this ?parents only? session, you'll have the opportunity to learn and ask questions regarding a variety of homework issues, like how much to help, how much time it should take, when to raise issues with the teacher, how much struggling is okay and more. The workshop is being led by our own Ms. I/S who between them have taught every grade from kindergarten through 8th grade! Don't miss it! Call for Agenda Items: If you have an agenda item for the brief PTA meeting that will follow Homework 101, please email president at hillcrestpta.org by October 18th. RSVP ASAP to the Benefit: Please be sure to RSVP for the Benefit if you haven't already. The donations are in (for the most part) but the only way this works is if we all attend the event. You can RSVP online at www.hillcrestpta.org by clicking on the "Order Your Tickets Now" link or you can simply drop your RSVP in the Benefit envelope at school or in the mailbox at 5854 St. Paul Court. Can I still RSVP? YES! You can still RSVP at the regular ticket price of $90 per person (including appetizers, 3-course dinner, dessert, parking, and FUN ? remember that Hillcrest PTA does not make a profit on the ticket price). You can RSVP online at www.hillcrestpta.org/funds/auction2007/tixorder.shtml, at the office or to Kim Thompson (5854 St. Paul Court). But do so soon as we may run out of tickets! If you're planning on purchasing a sponsor table, please let us know soon. Don't be marooned without a ticket! 2. What should I wear? Anything goes! Our theme is Pirates of the Caribbean: The Legend of the Hillcrest Treasure. So dress like a pirate, a "wench", a mild mannered 18th Century lady or gentleman, or a royal naval officer. Or if you'd rather, simply dress like you're in the Caribbean! It's up to your imagination! Can't find good women's pirate wear? Well you're in luck because this Wednesday evening is the Wench's Wardrobe event where you'll be able to find the perfect wench-wear for the event! 3. Is it too late to turn in a donation? How much help is too much? What isn't enough? How long should it take in K, 1st, 2nd, and onward? Notice a big jump in homework between 2nd and 3rd grades? All of your questions will be answered on Thursday! Please come! Babysitting will be provided. Followed by a PTA Meeting from 8 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. Topics for this brief meeting are: Benefit update. Budget matters. Feedback and discussion regarding the meeting with the LRPC and OUSD on Tuesday. Babysitting will be provided until 8:30 p.m. A word about Tuesday: On Tuesday, we will have a community meeting with the OUSD to discuss the final LRPC report and its recommendations. First, I would urge everyone to actually read the report prior to throwing support or taking it to task, whichever might be your inclination. Second, I urge everyone to recognize that the report is a thoughtful compromise among all stakeholders and cannot be picked apart recommendation by recommendation. Finally, I would ask that we all be respectful of each others' viewpoints and recognize that the report is not, and should not be, representative of any one perspective at the sacrifice of another. If the report wholly satisfied one constituency at the complete sacrifice of another, that would be a sign of failure in my view. The question is whether we can, having had our viewpoints represented through caucuses, come together to support a report that requests a little bit from everyone to make this school the continued success that it has been. I look forward to seeing you all on Tuesday night. Shannon Broome, PTA President EVENTS/PROGRAMS Final LRPC Report Caucuses and Community Meeting The Long Range Planning Committee will hold caucus meetings this Tuesday October 23rd to discuss the final report of the committee. Please note that copies of the report will NOT be available at the meetings but there will be a presentation summarizing the findings and recommendations. The full report is available online. The evening will be divided into two parts: 7:00-7:55 pm.: LRPC representatives will meet with their individual caucuses to review the final report. 8:00-9:00pm: All members of the Hillcrest community (including prospective parents and school neighbors) are invited to meet with the full Long Range Planning Committee, as well as OUSD representatives to discuss the report. Contact: Sara Bedford & Diana Biondi NEWS/ANNOUNCEMENTS Hillcrest Helps Out: Benefit Beneficiary It is a tradition as part of our annual Benefit for Hillcrest fundraising effort to give interested parents the opportunity to make a donation for the benefit of another Oakland public school or educationally related effort. This year the PTA Executive Board selected Lakeview Elementary School as the designated benefit beneficiary. Donations made to this fund will help provide seed money to begin an art program in the primary grades (K-2). Lakeview Elementary School sits across the street diagonally from the Grand Lake Theater on Grand Avenue, less than 3 miles from Hillcrest. From the playground, the roar of 580 drowns out the sound of children playing at recess. Half of the children at Lakeview School are from socio-economically disadvantaged families as categorized by OUSD. The principal indicates that for a variety of reasons there is very little parental involvement or financial support for the school. The Project: Lakeview Elementary is in need of an art program for K-2 students. Dedicated art programs have been absent from public school funding for many years now. At Lakeview, extra funding received enables the school to have a music teacher two days per week, serving only upper grade students. Primary grades, K-2 have no music and no art programs offered to them at all. At Hillcrest these are programs that are funded by PTA resources. Like many Oakland schools, Lakeview does not have a PTA. Please consider making a small donation to this item as part of your Hillcrest Benefit planning. If each Hillcrest family contributed even $10.00, the project would be well on its way. At the Benefit, the Lakeview art program will have its own table assignment where you can make your contribution as part of the silent auction. Thank you for your consideration. Contact: Joanne Karchmer Phone: 655-1418 Another Opportunity to Help Out Our Community Okay, for all of you willing volunteers who asked about the whole family helping out...HERE'S YOUR CHANCE! We need volunteers on Saturday, November 3 (10am-noon) to help plant 600 daffodils at Lockwood Elementary. Lockwood has been described as a "forgotten school" and could really use this morale boost. Come join other Hillcrest families AND Lockwood Elementary families to beautify their campus. This is Daffodil Day in Oakland, what better way to celebrate! PTA PRESIDENT'S MESSAGE Thank you Ms. Iversen and Ms. Staniford for answering all of our questions about homework from the parents' perspective! The Homework 101 Workshop was extremely helpful and we appreciate all the work you put into it! Thanks also to Sally McLanahan and our wonderful middle school babysitting volunteers ? you did a great job! At our PTA meeting, we approved budgetary changes, specifically a $1000 increase to our copier budget, a $300 teacher supply allocation, reimbursement of copying costs for the LRPC report (~ $300) and payment of custodial services for the night of the LRPC caucus meetings, an increase of $800 to the principal fund, and a transfer of maintenance project money back into the contingency fund. Shutterbugs we need you! If you have taken pictures in your child's classroom, on a fieldtrip or at any other school event, we request that you upload the photos to the following website for use in our digital yearbook that we are trying to create. Just log onto www.kodakgallery.com with the following username and password and create a new album with a name that tells us what it's about (e.g., Halloween parade, 4th grade field trip to UC Botanical Gardens). We need your pictures! www.kodakgallery.com email: president at hillcrestpta.org password: hillcrest Finally, thanks to everyone in our community for coming together at the LRPC meeting on Tuesday. It was gratifying to see how people were able to express their viewpoints and even disagree while still maintaining respect for others in the room. Happy and Safe Halloween! Nancy is now busy caring for her granddaughter, Sequoia, but generously volunteers her time to select books for our new birthday book program. We invite you all to join us as we honor Nancy's many years of dedication and service to the Hillcrest community. It would be wonderful if former students and families could attend. Contact: Cindy Pierson Phone: 510-658-5795 Hillcrest Helps Out: Benefit Beneficiary It is a tradition as part of our annual Benefit for Hillcrest fundraising effort to give interested parents the opportunity to make a donation for the benefit of another Oakland public school or educationally related effort. If you are interested, please email Donna Somerville at dwrightsomerville at yahoo.com. This is a great opportunity for our kids to get involved and help other kids in their community. Phone: 594-0338 Email: dwrightsomerville at yahoo.com HELP WANTED Do You Speak Spanish? What: If you are a Hillcrest parent that speaks Spanish, are you willing to be a substitute Spanish teacher for our Language Program? This is a VERY infrequent need, but we need individuals who can be called on with minimal notice. It is a paid position. If you are interested please contact the board. When: Various, 7:30am-8:30am Where: Hillcrest School Email: hillcrestlanguageschool_board at yahoogroups.com REMINDERS Afterschool Class Schedule Reminder: No After School Classes on October 31 and November 14 and 21. Please be sure to mark your calendars and make other arrangements for your child after school on those Wednesdays. The event will not only be fun, but it is our biggest annual fund raiser! This event will help pay for so many of the wonderful programs that our children enjoy every day. As part of the Oakland Unified School District, Hillcrest receives funding from OUSD. But due to Hillcrest's high test scores and socioeconomic base, there is state and local funding for specific educational purposes for which Hillcrest is not eligible, and rightly so. The PTA has determined that one of the best ways to enrich our children's education is to provide assistants and specialists to work with the Hillcrest staff in particular areas. These roles include a curriculum aide, a library aide, art and music teachers, computer instructor, and teachers to achieve class-size reduction. Please help us raise the funds we need to continue to provide all of these programs and more! Please come to the Benefit! You can still RSVP at the regular ticket price of $90 per person (including appetizers, 3-course dinner, dessert, parking, and FUN ? remember that Hillcrest PTA does not make a profit on the ticket price). But do so soon because the price goes up on November 5 and we may sell out! RSVP online at www.hillcrestpta.org, at the office or to Kim Thompson (5854 St. Paul Court). Are financial constraints causing you not to buy a ticket? A huge part of the Hillcrest Treasure is our wonderful community ? and that means you! Don't let the price of entry hold you back. If the ticket price is too steep, please contact Kim Thompson at kim.thompson at us.pwc.com to make arrangements to attend. A carousing good time will be had by all buccaneers and mateys who attend the Benefit! Although our invitations say that the event ends at 11, the Claremont has agreed to let the Fourth Street Band play until 11:30 pm on the night of the Benefit. So get ready to have lots of fun! Can you still make donations? Yes, send them in (but send them soon). You can donate online now. They'll be included in the Catalog Supplement that we will distribute shortly before the Benefit. Where do you drop off your donations? You can drop them off at Sandy Baxter's house (6220 Buena Vista Road) or Kim Thompson's house (5854 St. Paul Court). Please call (Sandy: 595-4127; Kim: 339-3150) to confirm someone is home before bringing your donation. Where should you drop off your wine for the Instant Wine Cellar? Glad you asked. We are holding "Instant Wine Cellar Drop Off Hours" over the next two Wednesday and Thursday mornings from 8:00 - 8:45 so you can drop off your wine when you drop off your kids. Look for a Hillcrest parent with an Instant Wine Cellar sign near the corner of Marguerite & Hermosa. Alternatively, you can drop off wines at Devra Laner's house (5662 Maxwelton Rd). Whatever your preferred drop off location, please drop off a bottle or two of your favorite wine (or any wine you love to drink) this week! OTHER BENEFIT NEWS Pirate Joke Winners Ahoy, Mateys! You submitted many a creative pirate joke in the recent pirate joke challenge. Congratulations to Ms. IS' 3/4 class for winning the contest. Which were the funniest jokes, you ask? Here are some of our favorites: Sierra Berrick (3rd): "What did the pirate say when he was cold?" Alexander Hutton (3rd): "Why are pirates so mean?" Shannon Bracco (5th): "Mystery Pirate Story: There was once a pirate crew. The captain was killed. A 'pi-tective' came and asked the cook, the waiter and the first mate what they were doing. The cook says, 'cutting the meat;' the waiter says, "'getting orders;' and, the First Mate says 'getting the mail.' So, who did it?" Maria Fang (mom): "What do you call a Buccaneer down at Village Market?" Hadiqa Zafar (5th): "Two pirates were out in the their ship one day, when a hand appeared in the ocean. 'Avast, ye!' said the first pirate. 'It looks to be someone's drowning!' The second pirate responds?." Answers are on the bottom of the Pirate Questionnaire (pdf) at www.hillcrestpta.org/funds/auction2007/piratequest.pdf. Ice Cream Party Monday! Finally! The date to celebrate the classes with the most donation participation to the 2007 Benefit arrives. On Monday afternoon, October 29th, we pulled Ms. Lyon's, Ms. Rochester's and Ms. Massey's classes out at the end of the day for a special treat as our way of saying THANK YOU! We had so many generous donors of auction items this year. We couldn't do it without your support. Parents, just wait until Saturday, November 10th. You'll be amazed at all the exciting bidding options. Where is Squawkers, now? LAST Benefit Booty Opportunity! About a week ago, Squawkers (our Benefit mascot), relocated to a perch above the sign-in sheet for A.T. Did you know he was there? Third-grader Alexander Hutton did and he was the only one to submit the location along with his joke in our recent pirate joke challenge. Congratulations, Alexander, you earned yourself some bonus booty! Ah?but is Squawkers still there? Has he found a new perch inside the Hillcrest building? Here's your last chance to win pirate treasure for your class. Take a look around for him, fill in the attached Squawkers Questionnaire and drop it in the treasure chest in the front hallway be Friday, Nov 2nd. Remind your classmates to turn in their answers sheets, too!
