Our goal is to work along side PTA to organize dynamic lectures, discussions, assemblies, socials and book studies, to learn about the cultures/people that are a part of Hillcrest. Our first event is January 24, 2008 at 7 p.m., when Christopher Carter, artist, sculptor, and lecturer will come and share his work with us. Join us for a fantastic evening of art and desserts. If you are interested in joining, our first book club selection is "Why Are All the Black Kids Sitting Together in the Cafeteria?" by Beverly Daniel Tatum, Ph.D. It's a book that OUSD Principals are reading together. Beverly has copies in her office if you would like to borrow one. The first meeting is February 20, 2008 at 6:30. If you have book suggestions on different or similar topics, we would love to hear from you. Again, we would love help planning events and look forward to hearing your suggestions. We are having a special Chabot Space and Science Center programming event on the evening of January 22nd so please mark your calendars. Teacher Booty ? You'll recall from the Benefit that several middle schoolers were walking around seeking donations for special wishes that teachers had made to improve the classroom experience for our students. As a result of your generosity that night, all of the teacher wishes were granted and the PTA voted to allocate the funding at our meeting last week. So now all we need to do is implement to bring these items to fruition. If you are interested in helping get the job done, please contact the room parent for your child's classroom to see if they need someone to champion the effort. If the items are not purchased by the end of April, the money will be returned to the PTA general fund. Computers ? We also authorized the purchase of the laptops that were the Raise Your Paddle beneficiary! Those are being ordered this week so we should see them rolling around on carts soon! Thanks again to Kim Thompson and her pirate crew for making the benefit such a great success this year to allow us not only to meet our regular budget but also to fund these special extras! If you see any of them around school, let them know how much you appreciate their efforts. Better yet, we need someone to chair the benefit for next year ? please save us the humiliation of begging you to do it and volunteer now! We need you! PTA Staff Update We are fortunate to have some wonderful PTA staff working here at Hillcrest! The district is able to provide a limited amount of classroom support in the form of stip subs (for example, Ms. Ruben) whom are assigned to Hillcrest full time. The PTA supplements that support by hiring staff for enrichment subjects like music, art and library for all grades. In addition we provide classroom aides and administrative support for many teachers, with an emphasis on split and overcrowded classes. To help families recognize faces around the school, in January we plan to display photo posters about our staff in the front hallway of the school. Shannon Broome PTA President EVENTS/PROGRAMS Black History Exhibit at Hillcrest What: The Art of Gee's Bend Quilts (on loan from Museum of the African Diaspora/SF) When: January 24 - February 29 Where: Front Hall IMPORTANT TO KNOW: The "Quilts of Gee's Bend" exhibition has received tremendous international acclaim. The quilts are from an African American community, founded in antebellum times, of Gee's Bend - a strip of land formed by a deep loop in the Alabama River, about thirty miles from Selma. The town's women developed a distinctive, bold, and sophisticated quilting style based on traditional American (and African American) quilts, but with a geometric simplicity reminiscent of Amish quilts and modern art. Art critics worldwide have compared the quilts to the works of important artists such as Henri Matisse and Paul Klee. The New York Times called the quilts "some of the most miraculous works of modern art America has produced." We're proud to have a part of the exhibit on view at Hillcrest. Please see front hall display and peruse the book "Gee's Bend: Architecture of the Quilt" for more info. Info online: www.quiltsofgeesbend.com or Enjoy!
